Why Do We Exist?

Does it matter “why?” Certainly! No organization, endeavor, or activity can hope to accomplish any goal without answering this question. In Matthew 16:18 Jesus tells Peter  “…I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” What church was Jesus intending to build? His church. The church that belongs to Christ. This question is not difficult to answer, but the question of "Why" is a more involved study, and needs to be given some thought.

God could have left us with massive amounts of information about the church in the first century, but he did not. What we have are a few letters, and a partial record of the birth of the church in the book of Acts. What we have was selected and delivered so that we could learn from it. The New Testament is not a collection of stories for our amusement, or a rough outline for Christian living. It is the inspired, written will of our Creator, and we need to respect it as such.

Back to the question of "Why?"

Checking on the New Testament church we learn:

A. The "church" has been given a different set of  responsibilities than the individual Christian has been given.

B. The New Testament church existed to serve 3 specific purposes, and scripture demonstrates clearly that God did not intend for the church to relieve the Christian of or interfere with individual responsibility to study, grow, and spread the gospel.

C. The 3 areas the early church worked in were:

  1. Edification  (Building up the saints)

  2. Benevolence  (Assisting the saints in need)

  3. Evangelism  (Exposing the world to God’s word)

As we consider scripture to be complete and authoritative, the only conclusion we can draw is that the example and pattern of congregational work and worship in the New Testament was given to answer the question of "why?" What purpose are we to serve as a church? We are to serve the same purpose as the church in the New Testament. Regardless of where your relationship with God stands, we are here to assist you in obtaining and strengthening your spiritual life, and in so doing enhance your physical life.
